AccessWV is a West Virginia Health Insurance plan created by statute to provide health insurance to the citizens of West Virginia who have been unable to find or have been denied health insurance in the private market because of pre-existing medical conditions. It also offers coverage to people who are eligible under the IRS Health Coverage Tax Credit Program or under the Federal Portability Act.

Applicants for West Virginia Health Insurance have the choice to apply for either single or family coverage under AccessWV. Within the single or family coverage plans, there are three different options to choose from (A, B, or C). Deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums vary depending on the plan that you pick.

All of the West Virginia Health Insurance plans offered by AccessWV cover hospital, physician services, out-patient services, home care, prescription drugs, maternity care, rehabilitation, out-patient therapies, and other medical services.

West Virginia Health Insurance offers not only the options described above for its citizens who are having a hard time finding insurance but they also offer a Mini-Med plan as well.

Mini-meds (also referred to as "defined benefit" health plans) are guaranteed-issue West Virginia Health Insurance, which means that anyone can buy coverage using this plan regardless of pre-existing health conditions. There is no underwriting and no questions about your health are asked.

West Virginia Health Insurance Mini-meds are easy to understand, they give you scheduled benefits for inpatient and outpatient services. For example, you can choose a plan that pays $1,000 a day for hospital coverage for the first 100 days.

Residents of West Virginia between the ages of 18-65 and their unmarried, dependent children up to the age of 19 or 25 if they are registered as full-time students are eligible for coverage in this West Virginia Health Insurance Mini-Med program.

Just as with traditional West Virginia Health Insurance, there is often a waiting period for expenses that are incurred because of a pre-existing condition. You can be covered for pre-existing conditions immediately if you come off a group or employer-sponsored plan and can supply a Certificate of Creditable Coverage stating you've had at least 12 months of continuous coverage with no more than a 63-day lapse.

Most West Virginia Health Insurance Mini Med programs are HIPAA qualified, meaning that they are considered "valid coverage" by other carriers. If you have one these plans and later get a group insurance plan through an employer, the time on these plans will most likely count toward the 12 month pre-existing waiting period for your new insurance.

Children are also taken care of by West Virginia Health Insurance through an active CHIPs (Children’s Health Insurance Program). This is a low cost West Virginia Health Insurance plan for children and teenagers of working families.

Your children are eligible if they: live in West Virginia, Are 18 or younger and don’t have any other private or West Virginia Health Insurance coverage. You will also have to meet the West Virginia Health Insurance CHIPs income guidelines.

West Virginia Health Insurance CHIPs program covers: doctor visits, regular physical examinations, hospital visits, routine immunizations, prescriptions (generally with a small co-pay), tests and X-rays, dentist’s visits, optical, emergency care, mental health, diabetic supplies and Urgent Care or After Hour Clinic Visits.

West Virginia Health Insurance is also available for those people who are self employed. The Federal government allows self-employed individuals to deduct 100 percent of individual West Virginia Health Insurance premiums from their federal income tax. This is definitely good news if you're self-employed.
