South Dakota Health Insurance DAKOTACARE works with doctors in South Dakota to develop innovative medical programs that lead to better health for everyone.

The South Dakota Health Insurance DAKOTACARE program provides flexible, affordable group and individual coverage—including the only monthly deductible option in the South Dakota.

At South Dakota Health Insurance DAKOTACARE, the theory is that your heath insurance should empower you to live a better and healthier life. That’s why they offer disease management programs as well as wellness education to help you and your family, enjoy healthier lives and in turn save costs on medications, doctors and hospitals.

The South Dakota Health Insurance Risk Pool offers health care coverage for those who do not qualify for coverage from any other source. Adults and children who have recently lost their insurance coverage may qualify for this important South Dakota program. Additionally, children under the age of 19 who have not had South Dakota Health Insurance coverage in the last six months may be eligible.

South Dakota children born to women who are eligible for South Dakota Health Insurance Medical Assistance are also covered by South Dakota Health Insurance Medical Assistance.

In order to be eligible to be a part of the South Dakota Health Insurance Medical Assistance program, the child must be born to a woman who is currently receiving Medical Assistance at the time of it’s birth.

There is no resource or income limit for eligibility. Coverage in the South Dakota Health Insurance Medical Assistance program will continue from the month of that the child is born, until the end of the month in which the child turns one year old as long as the child lives in the mother’s household and both continue to be resident in South Dakota.

Families who are eligible are entitled to full South Dakota Health Insurance Medical Assistance coverage. Covered services include: doctor appointments, hospital stays, dental and vision services, prescription drugs, rehab/therapy, chiropractic services.

The South Dakota Health Insurance CHIP program (Children's Health Insurance Program) offers health insurance at low or no cost to South Dakota children who meet certain qualifying guidelines.

The South Dakota Health Insurance CHIP offers health insurance coverage to uninsured children whose family income is up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level (that is approximately a monthly income of $3,675 for a family of four). Some children who already have private health insurance may also qualify for CHIP paying deductibles, co-payments and other medical services not covered by their private policy.
The South Dakota Health Insurance CHIP covers: doctor appointments, hospital stays, dental and vision services, prescription drugs, mental health care, and other medical services.

South Dakota Health Insurance may provide up to 12 months of additional transitional medical benefits to former low-income medical recipients.

South Dakota families who are no longer eligible for Medical Assistance for Low-Income Families (LIF) because of employment or child support received by a member of the household may receive additional South Dakota Health Insurance Medical Assistance.

The family must have received South Dakota Heath Insurance Medical Assistance for Low-Income Families for at least three of the six months prior to leaving the program. The family's monthly eligible income must be at or below 185 percent of the Federal Poverty Guideline. A child who is 18 is not eligible for South Dakota Health Insurance Transitional Medical Benefits unless they are a full-time student in high school and will graduate before they turn 19.

Eligible families are entitled to full South Dakota Health Insurance Medical Assistance coverage. Covered services include: doctor appointments, hospital stays, dental and vision services, prescription drugs, rehab/therapy, chiropractic services.
