New Mexico Health Insurance (NM)
New Mexico is a state that works hard to make sure that all of its citizens have good access to New Mexico Health Insurance.
The New Mexico Insurance Division is responsible for regulating all kinds of insurance sold in the state of New Mexico - including New Mexico Health Insurance policies. If you need health insurance coverage, the Insurance Division can assist you in finding an insurance agent or insurance company that is licensed to do business in New Mexico. An even easier way to do this search is to use healthinsuranceusa.com.
The New Mexico Health Insurance Pool was created to cover those individuals who do not have access to any other health insurance. New Mexico Health Insurance offered through the Pool is available to residents of New Mexico with a permanent street address; and who have a qualifying medical condition. If you are eligible for HIPPA you will be covered by New Mexico Health Insurance.
New Mexico Health Insurance allows you to choose your own health care provider. This choice can make a difference in the amount you pay for services and the benefits you are eligible for.
You have the option to choose between selecting a Participating Provider (one that contracts with New Mexico Health Insurance to provide services at reduced rates) or a Non Participating Provider (one that does not contract with New Mexico Health Insurance).
The amount the New Mexico Health Insurance pool pays for a covered service is always based on the “covered charge” for that service. The covered charge is always less than or equal to the provider’s billed amount. You need to pay the difference between the billed amount and the covered charge.
The advantages of opting to go with a Participating Provider are that: the provider will do the paperwork and file your claim for you, and you will not have to pay the difference between the amount billed by the provider and the covered charge for that service.
New Mexico Health Insurance has a program geared toward health coverage for children called New Mexi Kids. To qualify for New Mexi Kids, children have to be under the age of 19 and live in the state of New Mexico. They also have to be US citizens or legal U.S. residents and fall within the income guidelines of the program. The income requirements are based on 235% of the federal poverty level. New Mexi Kids uses an eligibility policy that assumes that all applications will pass through the system, therefore your New Mexico Health Insurance coverage will start as soon as the application is received. Coverage can be terminated if it is found that the child does not meet the eligibility requirements after the completion of the application review.
New Mexico Health Insurance also provides a Carve Out plan for its elderly residents. The New Mexico Health Insurance Carve-Out Plan is set up to “coordinate” benefits with Medicare and generally only pays benefits only after Medicare has paid its part of your covered health care services. Medicare is known as the “primary” carrier and pays its benefits first.
In this case, New Mexico Insurance is the “secondary” carrier. It isn’t possible to make New Mexico Health Insurance the primary carrier and nor can you choose to bypass Medicare when you are a part of the Carve Out. If the services that you require are normally covered by Medicare, a claim for those services must be submitted to Medicare first. Medicare will calculate its benefits and will provide you with an Explanation of Medicare Benefits (EOMB) form. This form must to be included with any claim that you send to New Mexico Health Insurance.
New Mexico works hard to make sure that its’ small employers can find appropriate New Mexico Health Insurance. To do this they have set up the New Mexico Health Insurance Alliance, the NMHIA is a coalition of independent health insurers who have agreed to offer a full range of health plans to companies with 50 or fewer eligible employees. Their goal is to fill the gap for those companies who are unable to qualify for commercial health insurance and to provide easier requirements for small employers and individuals to make New Mexico Health Insurance more accessible.
