All residents of the District of Columbia are entitled to buy an individual health insurance policy through Carefirst Blue Cross Blue Shield. If you are turned down due to a pre-existing condition, be sure to ask for a "guaranteed issue" policy.

District of Columbia Health Insurance Unity Health Care program provides every patient with a primary care provider who can make referrals to specialists if needed. For those who are able to pay, a sliding scaled based on family size and income is used to determine the cost of your policy. Unity Health Care accepts Medicaid, Medicare, HealthRight, Managed Care Organization, DC Healthcare Alliance and most private insurance plans.

The District of Columbia Health Insurance, DC Healthy Families program provides health insurance coverage for children, young adults under age 19 who live alone, pregnant women, and parents/guardians whose family meets the specified income guidelines.

The District of Columbia Health Insurance Counselling Project provides free one-on-one counselling for Medicare beneficiaries who have questions about any aspect of Medicare coverage and services, including the new Part D prescription drug benefit, or Medigap coverage.

The District of Columbia Health Insurance Medicaid plan is a government program that is designed to assist the poor and indigent obtain health care services. Pregnant women and children under age 19 who meet certain income requirements may be eligible for Medicaid coverage, along with aged, blind, and disabled individuals.

The District of Columbia Health Insurance DC Rx plan is a joint project between the District of Columbia and the National Association of Counties (NACo), it is designed to save you money on prescription medications. The card is free and available to all District residents regardless of age, income or existing health insurance. 98 percent of all District pharmacies participate in this program.

The District of Columbia has the highest level of breast and cervical cancer mortality in ll of the 50 states. The mission of the DH Health Insurance DC Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (DC BCCEDP) is to reduce the District’s breast, cervical, and ovarian cancer levels through the provision of health education, technical expertise, case management, and the coordination of early detection services for women living in the District of Columbia.

Currently, Project WISH is taking on eligible women age 50 and over into the program for breast and cervical cancer screening. The services covered by District of Columbia Health Insurance Project WISH include an annual mammogram, a Pap test, a clinical breast exam and related diagnostic services at one of our area providers.
