Based on the number of members, HIP Health Plan of New York is the largest HMO serving New York City. HIP contracts with more than 160 hospitals, including major acute care centers, in New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut, to provide health care services to its members.

HIP Health Plan has a large network of providers (HIP contracted physicians) available to its clients. These physicians practice in large, multi-specialty outpatient medical centers and outpatient medical centers associated with some of New York City’s finest hospitals, including St. Luke’s- Roosevelt Hospital Center, Beth Israel Medical Center, Lenox Hill Hospital, Montefiore Medical Center and St. Barnabas Medical Center. The HIP network also includes many private physicians who work from their own personal offices.

There are approximately 43,000 physicians and other healthcare providers in the HIP network, including the networks of their subsidiaries, and more than 72,000 locations throughout New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut. In 2005, HIP acquired ConnectiCare, one of the largest health plan providers in Connecticut and Vytra Health Plans in 2001. HIP Health Plan has a membership of nearly 1.4 million.

An Overview of HIP Health Plans

HIP Health Plans include HIP Prime which is an extensive HMO plan that offers coverage within an ever-expanding network of health care providers. This HMO plan consists of low premiums, access to a vast network of participating physicians and specialists, and discounts on value added services.


HIP Access offers benefits beyond the normal HMO plans, including not requiring a referral to see a specific physician. HIP Access members can choose from over 25,000 doctors and specialists located in more than 40,000 areas, including having access to most of New York’s finest hospitals and medical practices. This plan involves no deductible and no coinsurance and 100% coverage (after co-pay) for most in-network services.

Another choice offered by HIP Health plans is HIP Classic. This plan provides quality, affordable health insurance coverage for small groups. It contains a structured tier rate which allows customers to choose coverage that best suits their company’s insurance needs. Members have a large network of participating multi-specialty physicians groups to choose from and also have access to medical groups associated with New York’s top hospitals. For primary care physicians, co-pays can be as low as $15 and there is 100% coverage after co-pay for most in-network services.
